FAQs
What is Luton Council of Faiths?
The Luton Council of Faiths is a voluntary body that brings together people from different faiths and cultural backgrounds to promote dialogue, understanding and cooperation across communities.
Our work supports social cohesion, community wellbeing and stronger relationships across Luton.
What does the council do?
We create opportunities for people from different communities to meet, learn and work together.
Our activities include dialogue events, educational programmes, youth engagement, leadership training for faith and community leaders, cultural initiatives and community mediation.
What does “interfaith” mean?
Interfaith refers to engagement and cooperation between people of different faiths and beliefs.
It encourages learning, dialogue and collaboration while respecting the distinct beliefs and traditions of each community.
Do people of different religions pray together at your events?
Our activities focus primarily on dialogue, education and cooperation.
At some events there may be moments of reflection or contributions from different traditions, but participants are never expected to take part in religious practices outside their own beliefs.
Everyone is free to participate in ways that are comfortable and respectful of their own faith or worldview.
Do interfaith activities weaken or dilute religious beliefs?
No. Interfaith engagement does not require people to change or compromise their beliefs.
Participants remain rooted in their own traditions while learning about others and building respectful relationships across communities.
What is interfaith dialogue and why is it important?
Interfaith dialogue brings people of different faiths and beliefs together to learn about one another and build respectful relationships.
In diverse communities such as Luton, interfaith dialogue helps reduce misunderstanding, strengthen trust and support peaceful cooperation between communities.
What role do faith communities play in local society?
Faith communities contribute to many aspects of community life including education, charity work, volunteering, social support and cultural life.
By working together, faith groups can help strengthen social networks, promote mutual understanding and contribute to the wellbeing of the wider community.
How does interfaith work support community cohesion?
Interfaith engagement encourages positive interaction between people who may otherwise have little contact with one another.
By creating opportunities for dialogue, education and shared community activities, interfaith work helps build trust, reduce stereotypes and strengthen the social fabric of the community
Who can take part in your activities?
Our activities are open to a wide range of people including:
- Members of different faith communities
- Schools and young people
- Community organisations
- Civic partners and public institutions

These programmes help young people develop faith literacy, intercultural awareness and positive community relationships.
What happens if there are tensions or misunderstandings between communities?
The council can help facilitate dialogue and community mediation when needed.
Our aim is to encourage respectful communication, rebuild trust and support constructive solutions that strengthen relationships.
How can organisations partner with the council?
We welcome collaboration with schools, charities, faith institutions, community organisations and public authorities.
Where appropriate, partnerships may include educational programmes, community initiatives, dialogue events or joint projects that support community wellbeing.
